Stay Safe Naturally with Wool
![]() Fire Resistant
What Wool Does for You
Wool keeps your baby safer with fire resistance. Why
Wool has a high ignition temperature, 570-600 degrees Fahrenheit, so it is less likely to catch fire than cotton, for example, which ignites at 225 degrees. Other factors also make wool fire resistant. Wool has high moisture content. Wool is high in nitrogen, which can be used as fire retardant. And, wool won’t melt like polyester, nylon, and other plastics do. Wool is naturally fire resistant, which makes it perfect for a child’s bedding and pajamas without any chemical treatment whatsoever. Renewable & Biodegradable Material
What Wool Does for You
Wool lets you feel good that your baby is environmentally responsible. Why
Wool is a renewable resource. Unlike petro-chem fibers and coatings that are made from diminishing resources of oil and gas, sheep continue to grow hair, and we can continue to shear it. Unlike every petro-chemical fiber, the feedstocks for which will never be replaced, and unlike bio-polymers, which require more energy to grow and process than natural fibers, wool is sustainable for the long-term future as it has been for the long-term past. Wool is biodegradable. After years and years, if you manage to use your pad enough that it becomes a threadbare rag, you can be confident that it will biodegrade without any high-tech help. Wool resists microorganisms like those that break down proteins during the biodegradation process, but wool will break down if it is kept warm and wet for a year. This slow decomposition is what makes wool desirable is mulch mats or weed mats. Wool is environmentally responsible. Wool has a small water footprint. Wool processing is relatively clean. Even conventional wool processing uses fewer harmful chemicals than petro-chem fibers. With organic wool, that impact is reduced even further. No Harmful Toxins
Why
Wool does not off gas. Wool will not change chemical structure during washing or on becoming urine saturated in a way that will harm you or your child. When your baby sleeps on or under layers of laminated plastic, polyester, or other oil- and gas-derived materials, she is exposed to harmful chemicals. If you are working to free your house of toxins, you are probably looking to avoid PVC, vinyl, phthalates, and other suspect materials. Wool gives you a safe alternative to petro-chemical-derived products with the added bonus of superior functionality. Our puddle pads and changing mats are not bleached or dyed. They are just 100% natural wool. Image © Isselee | Dreamstime.com
